It’s something so many patients tell us every single day. And it’s really an exciting part of practice, is seeing somebody come in kind of run down, they’re not sleeping well, and as they go through care, they’re just sleeping great.
So we know based on research that when we adjust the spine, we remove any interference through the nervous system, which is termed the subluxation. On a research level, we know that we’re clinically decreasing what’s known as cortisol in your body. And so that hormone cortisol is the main factor in stress related to your body. It’s how you measure stress in your body. So high cortisol levels, high stress.
Now, when you get an adjustment, we decrease that cortisol level based on research. In the sleep world what that means is that when you go to sleep with high cortisol levels, first, you don’t fall asleep as quickly as you can, but then you don’t get into as deep of a sleep. You don’t get to that REM sleep as quickly as you could if your cortisol level was lower.
So after an adjustment, we lower your cortisol levels, then you fall asleep faster, you fall asleep deeper, you get more REM sleep, and that results in you waking up refreshed, feeling better, more energy for the day.
