Hi, I’m Dr. Jonathon Pinnow, your chiropractor for sciatica in Sun Prairie, WI and I’m really excited to talk to you today about sciatica.
You see, we have patients that come into our office every single day with sciatica, just talking about unbearable symptoms, shooting pain down one leg at a time, it can be right or left, and we help these patients every single day, we get tremendous results.
But what I wanted to do is just give you an idea, give you three examples of tests that you can do at home to help familiarize yourself with what may be causing your sciatica.
Sciatica Symptoms Sun Prairie WI
There’s three different areas where sciatica symptoms can come from. One is from either of the muscles in your body. The second is from skeletal. So your bones, they may not be moving right, they may be out of place, putting pressure on the nerves. And then the third thing, is it can be a disc issue.
So I’m going to show you a test to kind of rule one of those three in or out and familiarize yourself with where those symptoms are coming from for you.
Sciatica Pain Test Sun Prairie WI
So the first test is a piriformis test. This is going to be related to the muscle component, and this is the muscle in through your backside, in your glutes.
Most people’s sciatica pains go through their sciatic nerve that either goes under the piriformis or through it. So you’re going to just bring your leg up like this.
And then this is, you do it on whatever side you’re feeling the shooting pains down, and then lean forward. If you’re having increased symptoms, that’s a good idea that that piriformis maybe part of it. So the piriformis test, number one.
The second test is the slump test. This is to help rule in any of those disc related symptoms.
So you’re going to appropriately slump forward, push the back backwards, and then you’re going to raise the leg straight forward.
Now, if you’re having issues with your disc, you’re going to slump forward and just barely start to raise that leg, and you’ll notice increased symptoms down into that leg.
The third test to do at home is milgrams. So you’re going to lay on your back, put your feet together, and then lift them straight up, bracing through your core. And I’ll show you that one.
Now, some patients will have symptoms in through the core of their body, but what we’re looking for is through the back and down into the glutes and the legs.
This test is to help rule for dysfunction in the spine, what we as chiropractors call a subluxation. It’s a joint that’s not moving properly. It can be putting pressure, irritation on the nerves. And that’s a spot that we got to fix.
So three tests for you to do at home, familiarize yourself with sciatica, for your, in your, in your own home. And if you need help, we’d love to help you out. We help people everyday with sciatica. It’s an easy fix for us.
So, look forward to seeing you soon and have a wonderful day.
